Exercise and Body Types Feb. 24, 2010
What body type are you? I read this article on the different body types. I had some very good points. I believe that most of us can fall under more then one of the three body types (Endomorph, Mesomorph or Ectomorph). The article made one very good point! That when it comes to body type, there is very little we could do to change our self into the image of another. As you diet and exercise to improve your health and physique, do not compare yourself with anyone else. Be the best you can be and created your own unique person. Remember this and you will reach your fitness goals with a little hard work.

Giving Birth Feb. 23, 2010
My aunt went into labor last night and I helped deliver her baby! It was an interesting sight to see. Probably the best birth control method out there because I sure am not going to get pregnant any time soon! We fled her to Lankaneau Hospital when her contractions were about four minutes apart. I thought that your water had to break and then all the pain begins; but apparently not. This was my aunt’s third child but her first girl. My aunt had her first two a natural birth; however, she demanded medicine for this one. I guess having a female is hard to handle! I’ll spare you all the gushy details about the birth but I’ll never forget how long it took to push that baby out. That baby girl was stubborn!
I distinctly remember we were watching Forrest Gump while all of this was happening. This atmosphere was nothing like you see in movies. I was also able to cut the umbilical cord too. In all, I was most amazed by the placenta. Weird, huh? My first birth sight and the highlight was the afterbirth. Nevertheless, I was ecstatic to witness the birth of my baby cousin.
My Son Feb. 19, 2010
My son Anthony has began to sign up for class for next year. Which will be his first year of high school. Last night I attend a meeting at the Downingtown high school last night. Talk about a trip down memory lane. I have so many stories I could tell but I don’t want to give my son any ideas, maybe a story for another day. Back to my son and his classes. Anthony was going to sign up for both Spanish and Latin. My son wants to be a doctor some day, so he wants to take Latin. After we talked about it, we both decided that it would be best if he took Latin for the next 2 years and then take Spanish in his last 2 years of high school. An after talking to him even more he has his 4 years of high school planed out and even what collages he would like to attend. I pulled him back and told him lets take one year at a time. But it was very nice to see that he has a plan and he knows what he wants.

Vertex Fitness Marketing Internship Blog 2 Feb. 19, 2010
School’s been crazy the past couple weeks. We had three snow days in a row! I haven’t been here at Vertex very much since my car does not like the snow very much. Since the snow came, all the tests got pushed back to this week at school, so between work and school I’ve lost a considerable amount of sleep this week. Today at Vertex I worked on some more stuff for the email system, as well as writing instructions for procedures. I took a break to work out with Shala, and felt my body yelling at me for not working out the past couple of weeks. It’s really time for me to get back in the gym. I’ve been working on a press release for our new Pilates instructors. It’s been really cool to learn about Belly Pilates over the last week, and all that Kelly does with her clients. We also took head shots for the website this past week and worked on “hitting the pavement” to get new clients through the door. Never a dull moment here at Vertex.
Nutrition tip for the day: Work out with a friend! This keeps you accountable. You’re much less likely to hit the “Snooze” button if you’ve got someone waiting for you.
Happy New Year! Feb. 18, 2010
No, I’m not crazy. I do realize that we’re already six weeks into 2010. And I had great expectations for this year, but life got in the way. I was sidetracked from my fitness resolutions by things like unexpected family deaths, upheavals at work, never-ending deadlines, and snowstorms (and more snowstorms, and well you get the point).
I realized that there’s always going to be something that could keep me from getting to Vertex, working out and eating healthy. I have to do something that I’ve never done before: make being healthy and active a priority.
So when Fat Tuesday rolled around a few days ago my first thought was, “Well isn’t this appropriate I’m feeling quite large today” followed by my second thought, “I’m giving up making excuses for not working out for Lent.” (Believe me, giving this up will surely be a sacrifice for me.)
Today is my January 1. All the things I wrote about in my previous blog I will master. That’s all for now, I have an appointment at Vertex I have to get to.
Car Woes Feb. 11, 2010
So I’ve had it with my car. I drive a ’98 Pontiac Bonneville and I’ve owned it for about 3 years. It doesn’t even look like the car belongs to me. My dad purchased it from a friend. Little did I know, when you purchase a used car, your purchasing its problems.
Over the years, I have had really bad luck with my car. My car radio got stolen, my windshield cracked, my friend crashed it into the steps of her house… the list goes on. I didn’t even take it to college because of the foreseeing damages it might face. So what did I do? Let it sit at home. Let it sit for so long that the inside of the car was filled with mildew and I needed to do a host of things under the hood. Don’t ask me how I’m driving it now; I’m lucky it past inspection!
Just recently, I had to buy a new battery, an alternator, and I noticed that my engine light was on so I went to take it at my mom’s dealer where she works, Armen of Ardmore. I went to take it to diagnostics to see what else was wrong with my car. Apparently the gas pump and fuel line is rusted. Rusted so much that if they were to fix the problem, the parts would fall apart in their hands! Which would cost me over $1000! I might as well get a new car right? RIGHT!
As I stated earlier, my mom works at Armen of Ardmore, a car dealership. She sells cars! Um, why didn’t I think about this before? Why didn’t I just buy a car from my mother?! Oh, because my dad had already put over $1000 to get it fixed for me to go on the road and he didn’t want to feel like he wasted money to get it fixed. I also feel like it was a gift from him to me, and if I decided to get a new car then the one he bought me, it would show that I would be unappreciative.
Tough to think about, but I’m definitely going with my decision to buy a new car from my mom. It’s either that or spending thousands of dollars to get a car that I don’t even particularly like to get fixed! I hope he doesn’t get mad, but I sure will be happy!
Does your exercise program catch fish? Feb. 10, 2010
When choosing an exercise program, most people decide to try a particular program or exercise because they heard of it on television, in a magazine article, or from a friend. They hope it will help them get the results they want, but after doing it for awhile, they realize it’s not working. Like the cliché, this is putting the cart before the horse. When I took a “Bait and Fly Casting” class in college in the Midwest where I was a Physical Education major, my teacher told me there are two kinds of flies: the kind that catch fish, and the kind that catch people. When you go to the store or make your own flies (like we did in class), some look pretty and fancy to you or I, but to a fish they look as appetizing as a twig, and not like anything they would ever want to eat. The fancy kind would not catch a fish, but it would get someone to spend money on them. If you know what kind of fish you are fishing for, and understand the eating habits and environment in which those fish live, you can buy or make just the right fly to catch one. The fitness industry is very similar. There are many things out there that catch people’s attention and get them to spend money, but they are not the right thing for getting results necessarily. Some, like our flies, look fancy, and are in an attractive package; but they really don’t do what is needed to change your body, and are not what exercise is all about. If what you really enjoy is being outdoors in nature, then buying the fancy flies will work for you because catching fish is not your goal. But if your goal is to catch fish, know what it is you need to get the job done. If you like to socialize and have fun, doing the fancy things will also work for you. However, if changing your body is what you are truly looking for, then choose what is proven to be most effective. Before deciding on and starting an exercise program, ask yourself a few questions: “What results do I want to achieve?” “What will it take to get the results I am looking for?” “Are the results I want realistic?” “Am I willing to do what it takes to get those results?” “What limitations do I have that might keep me from getting the results I desire?” “What kind of commitment am I willing to give (time and effort)?” These and other questions that determine your motivation for starting an exercise program need to be asked before picking up a weight or buying your new pair of sneakers. Some exercise is very productive; others are more recreational and fun. Some take a lot of time while others are more efficient. Know what you want out of a program and what it can offer before you decide on what to do. The thought you put into doing that will make all the difference in what you get out of your exercise regimen.

Vertex Fitness Marketing Internship Blog 1 Feb. 09, 2010
Working at Vertex as a marketing intern has proven to be very different from my other internship experiences. After working in London and back home on Long Island, Vertex has allowed me to mold my own experience. I work on things that I think are important and have been helping them to develop a unique marketing mix for their client base. Coming from the Villanova Business School, I was led to believe that internships are very structured and boring, full of stupid tasks like getting coffee and filing. This has not been the case at Vertex. I was immediately entrusted with a series of very important tasks and have worked directly with most of the staff members. The team atmosphere brings in a feeling of the “Vertex family” that is warm and welcoming to all of its employees as well as clients. This place is full of jokes and laughter, all the while keeping a distinct focus on the goal of the organization--serving its clients. After working out with Shala, I can see how Vertex uses its unique program to help its clients reach their fitness goals. Those are all my thoughts for now.
Tip for the day: Walk to class or run to the gym instead of driving. It’ll help get you in the zone to work out or get focused.

Rewarding Yourself Feb. 05, 2010
Rewarding your self! When’s the last time you reward your self? I know as a single parent sometimes it’s hard to stop and think about doing something for myself. No matter how small it may be, reward your self. Take a few seconds and do something for yourself. It will make you feel good!
