High Intensity Nation www.highintensitynation.com Dave Durell Vertex Fitness Personal Training Studio Best of The Main Line Health and Fitness Exercise

I have to thank Dave Durell for taking the time to interview me for his web site HighIntensityNation.com.  I was a bit nervous at first when we started talking.  Dave is a professional who has been in the fitness industry for many years and has worked in the industry at places like the Tampa Bay Buccaneer's with head strength and conditioning coach  Mark Asanovich He was  and has interviewed Mike Mentzer, what could I possibly say in and interview with Dave to make it interesting enough to be on his web site?  When we started talking it was like we were old friends, telling stories and talking about our experiences.  Dave made the interview very comfortable.  Before we started I asked Dave how long he expected the interview to last.  He said 45 minutes to an hour, before we knew it we had been talking almost an hour and we could have talked twice a long.

It was truly a pleasure doing this interview with Dave and I look forward to working with him on some projects in the future.

Thanks again Dave.

Breast Cancer Study With Lankenau Hospital
Oct. 01, 2010 *

To see and read the article written in
Main Line Today Magazine

It was July 2007 and I was on my way to IDEA World Fitness Convention, a fitness conference held in San Diego, when I sat next to an research oncologist from Drexel.  We started talking about the IDEA Convention, the fitness business and how Vertex Fitness could relate what we do with the type of research he was doing. We talked about many thing; how to go about funding a study, what groups are out there that are doing funding, why they were funding these studies to getting the results published and how that helps everyone involved.  It was a very interesting and informative conversation.  I spent the whole week at the conference learning about the fitness business, all while this conversation I had on the plane kept replaying in my head.  So, one of the first thing I did when I got home from the IDEA convention was talked with Vertex Fitness client Dr Paul Gilman, Medical Director at Lankenau Cancer Center.  Dr. Gilman had been a client at Vertex Fitness for some time and he had seen great results.  He had come to us with some low back and hip joint pain and through weeks and months of training with us the pain has slowly subsided.  He and I sat down and talked about the idea of working together and producing a study that could help his patients.  We talked about many things, but soon came back to the way the workouts were helping him, his joint pain had subsided and his low back was feeling a lot better.  He told me how one of the drugs that is commonly prescribed to breast cancer patients causes a lot of joint pain.  He also told me that because of this side effect many patients elect to go off the drug.  Unfortunately, going off the drug is not recommended because it has be shown to keep these women in reemission after a bout with breast cancer.  So we decided to see if doing the type of exercise we do at Vertex Fitness could help elevate some of the joint pain associated with taking these drugs.  If it could help with the join pain, we think women will stay on the drugs longer, stay in reemission longer and have better quality in their life.

That is how this started.  The following article was published in the October 2010 issue of Main Line Today Magazine.  It talks abut the results of the pilot study and where we might go from here.

Concussions: We have a responsibility to make a difference
Apr. 06, 2012

I played football from Junior High through College.  I wonder…  I wonder if some of the things I have delt with over the years, some of my thoughts, some of the things I feel could come from playing football and head injuries.  I watched these videos and can not tell you how many times the tears came to my eyes.  These were some of the strongest men in the world and they were reduced to a fraction of the person they once were.  I am asking you to watch these videos, do some research and watch others, then contact me.  I want to talk to others who want to make a difference, maybe not for these people but others, young kids who have no idea what they are in for, parents of kids who have no idea what could possibly happen to their children.  I want to be a part of making a difference.  The first step I am taking is to team up with Mark Asanovich & Ralph Cornwell to hold a Certified Head & Neck Training Specialist Course and Certification at my place of business, Vertex Fitness Personal Training Studio located in Bryn Mawr, PA on May 18th & 19th, 2012.  Please contact me for more details.

We are doing something about it.

High Intensity Strength Training W/Dan Riley
Apr. 05, 2012

Dan Riley, strength and conditioning educator, says that the best way to build strength and burn calories is through high-intensity training and the right technique.

Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) is the number of calories your body burns after you stop exercising. The best way to accomplish this is through high intensity strength training, which is the heaviest and most challenging weights you can lift for ten to twelve reps.
You can continue to burn calories for two days after your workout! But, Riley says, "It's not how many sets, it's how you do each set." So, proper technique is key.

Proper Technique:

1) Eliminate Momentum -- when you incorporate momentum, you will use fewer muscle fibers and get fewer results.

2) Pause at the Contracted Position

3) Don't drop the weights

4) Emphasize lowering the weights The American College of Sports Medicine says take three seconds minimum.

5) Use full range of movement

Riley says, "If you perform one set properly using high-intensity exercise, you will not want to perform a second set nor will you need to."

Dan Riley is the Strength and Conditioning Educator at Memorial Hermann Sports Institute. He's also the co-host of the Roberta and Riley radio show on Sports Talk 790 AM in Houston, Texas on Saturdays at 10am. Riley has over 27 years with the National Football League.

Calling all animal lovers! Come out this Sunday and join Vertex Fitness Personal Training Studio at Finding Shelter's 2nd Annual Sproutfest 2011!

Finding Shelter Animal Rescue began on January 1, 2010 as a no-kill rescue for dogs and cats. Finding Shelter was inspired by Sprout, a blind Chihuahua who was abandoned on the side of the road in November, 2009. Sprout was sick and afraid and was expected to live only two, short weeks. He has quite a bit of fight in him for such a small guy and on Sunday, October 23, 2011 we will celebrate 2 years with Sprout in our lives. He is our own little miracle.

To celebrate this great milestone, Finding Shelter is hosting a super-adoption event in honor of Sprout’s anniversary. Please come out and celebrate with us!

To Feel Better, Exercise Harder: Study
Aug. 31, 2011

WEDNESDAY, May 4 (HealthDay News) -- Vigorous exercise offers more of a mood boost than less strenuous exercise, a new study finds.

U.K. researchers compared 11 sedentary people who did moderate and high-intensity exercise. Their mood was assessed before, during, immediately following, and 20 minutes after they did the workouts.

The participants' moods were more negative during and immediately after high-intensity exercise, compared to when they did the less strenuous exercise or no exercise. However, their mood 20 minutes after doing the vigorous workout was much better compared to before the workout.

Cardiac Arrest Less Deadly in Exercise Facilities, Study Finds
Aug. 24, 2011

THURSDAY, May 5 (HealthDay News) -- You stand a better chance of survival if your heart stops beating while you're in an exercise facility than if you're in another type of indoor public place, a new study found.

Overall, 50 percent of cardiac arrest victims survived if the attack occurred in a public place where some sort of exercise was happening, whereas only 36 percent of those who experienced cardiac arrest in other indoor public places survived. Exercise facilities included places traditionally thought of, such as gyms and fitness clubs, as well as places considered alternative exercise venues, such as bowling alleys and dance studios.
