Exercise Consistency

The biggest key to seeing results in any program is exercise consistency. You might have the greatest trainer in the world, but if you don’t go see him or her, not much is going to change.

So, how does one become more consistent? For starters, be realistic. I have a wife, two kids, a full time job and a long commute, it would be unrealistic for me to workout 5 times a week (I shoot for one strength training session and two runs/week).

First, establish a place to exercise. It could be a health club, it could be the local park or even your basement, it doesn’t matter where, as long as you get there. Then, pick a time to exercise. In an ideal world, you should try to exercise at the same approximate time. When you have your time and place, write it on the calendar and program it into your phone!! (Maybe the best way to establish a time and place is to hire a Personal Trainer! That way you’ll know where and when you are exercising. You’ll also benefit from having a (recurring) appointment, which most people are loathe to break.)

Finally, tell people what you are doing and when you are doing it. This serves a couple of different purposes:

  • If they know you are working out they are less likely bug you,
  • By telling people, you are making yourself accountable to them (and yourself) to do what you said you were going to do.

One last thing: Be Patient! It takes approximately one month to make a change in your routine stick. Starting an exercise program isn’t easy, but if you stay with it, you will reap the rewards!
