The Body, Give It What it Asks For (My Fitness Journey – Vertex Fitness Diary 20)

It turns out that when you ignore what your body is telling you it wants and needs, it won’t go away, it will just get louder–until you stop functioning. Not listening to our bodies is one of the worst things we can do. Guess who almost learned that the hard way today!

I did something I know better than to do–I came to my workout when I had barely eaten anything for breakfast. I’ve been feeling under the weather, and I just had no appetite when I woke up. I was tempted to cancel my workout and crawl back into bed, but I know that if I let myself start doing that, it won’t be long until I find a “great reason” not to come in every week. Besides, working out is a priority in my life now. It’s the one thing I do consistently for no other reason than that it’s good for me. Tuesday really is a self care day for me. It’s typical for me to come in for my workout even when I’m not feeling on top of my game–tired, headache, stressed, whatever–because I often find that I don’t feel that way anymore after my workout.

Predictably, my gas tank was running on empty and I didn’t have as much to give to my workout this week as I usually like. I soon became nauseous from the effort with no food. I was in the home stretch when my body REALLY threw a fit. I started feeling short of breath and wheezy on the second to last exercise, so I used my inhaler before moving on to the leg press. We actually had to cut the leg press short because I just could not catch my breath. I have to remind myself that I am working on the problem–after weeks of ignoring my breathing issues, I finally made appointments with my doctor to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

Your body has ways of reminding you when we forget to give it what it needs–good food, plenty of rest, and enough exercise to stay strong. Oh, and air. It needs air too. When you neglect one of these things, the rest tend to come tumbling down. I didn’t eat because I wasn’t feeling well, probably because I’ve been putting off making doctor’s appointments because I’ve felt “busy”. You can’t get too busy to take care of yourself, because there is a limit to what you can just push through. I almost learned that the hard way today. That’s just one more reason I recommend working with a trainer–Dwayne helps me recognize which boundaries I can push through to get stronger, and when we’re up against a safety issue. The distinction is a crucial one!
